GetGood Experiments, Adventures, & Brain vitamins
The GetGood Experiments are a new platform at LifeLabs. We invited experts from around the world to share a favorite
life tip in the form of a quirky yet useful street experiment.  The goal: Get Good at one new skill each week.

Your mission: At least once when talking with someone today, underscore what you are saying
by representing ideas on your fingers.

Example: An example would be if you illustrated each point on your hand while saying "We have 2
things to think about today. The first thing is (while touching one finger)... the second thing is
(while switching to another finger)"

Why: Gestures make messages more sticky and memorable. In our research we found that people
named as highly charismatic have a habit of using illustrative gestures - especially counting
gestures -  to make the points have a visual impact.

This week's challenge was created by Dr. LeeAnn Renninger, an impression formation and rapport researcher.
Today's Experiment: Do a Count Gesture

Your mission: This week every time you hear the word 'but' silently test yourself to see if you
could have worded things differently by replacing the 'but' with the word 'and'.

Example: 'I like your idea, but think it's not feasible' vs. 'I like your idea and am just wondering how
feasible it is.

Why: The word 'But' triggers a mental closing. It wipes out all positive words that were said before
it. The word 'and', on the other hand, builds bridges. In our research we've found that it opens
doors to further conversation.

This week's challenge is brought to you by Prof. Matt Riley, a researcher of psycholinguistics at the Max Planck
Institute, Netherlands.
Today's Experiment: Convert-a-But
